Human Habitats Speaker: Anna Burkey

Although she has only graced our city for less than five years, Anna Burkey is a fixture in Melbourne’s arts and culture scene.

She is Arts Centre Melbourne‘s new Head of Arts Learning and before that she headed up the Centre for Youth Literature and Reader Development & Offsite Programs at State Library Victoria.

Before coming to Melbourne, Anna worked at the world’s first City of Literature office.

‘Edinburgh is a city full of stories and arts and festivals and fascinating people. I spent my time there running projects that explored how we use the arts, and literature in particular, to celebrate the complex, living patterns of a city’s DNA.’

Some of those projects were One Book – One City, projecting poetry on the surfaces of Edinburgh — including the castle wall, and producing Story Shop.

AnnaAnna is speaking at our Human Habitats: High Density event on Friday and in preparation has been grappling with Big Questions about arts and culture and cities and people.
‘How do we highlight the art that has been crafted over the centuries, make it relevant to the citizens, use it to inspire beautiful new stories? How do we do that on a citywide or national scale – and do we even want to? Perhaps assortments of smaller projects have greater influence.’

We are really looking forward to hearing from Anna next Friday. The event is fully booked, but you’ll be able to experience the magic for yourself in podcast form later on.

You can find more about Anna at her website and follow her on Twitter.
